Author: Sandra Byrd

Release Date: October 9, 2018

Genre: Historical/Gothic Romance

Miss Eleanor Sheffield is a talented evaluator of antiquities, trained to know the difference between a genuine artifact and a fraud. But with her father’s passing and her uncle’s decline into dementia, the family business is at risk. In the Victorian era, unmarried Eleanor cannot run Sheffield Brothers alone.

The death of a longtime client, Baron Lydney, offers an unexpected complication when Eleanor is appointed the temporary trustee of the baron’s legendary collection. She must choose whether to donate the priceless treasures to a museum or allow them to pass to the baron’s only living son, Harry—the man who broke Eleanor’s heart.

Eleanor distrusts the baron’s motives and her own ability to be unbiased regarding Harry’s future. Harry claims to still love her and Eleanor yearns to believe him, but his mysterious comments and actions fuel her doubts. When she learns an Italian beauty accompanied him on his return to England, her lingering hope for a future with Harry dims.

With the threat of debtor’s prison closing in, Eleanor knows that donating the baron’s collection would win her favor among potential clients, saving Sheffield Brothers. But the more time she spends with Harry, the more her faith in him grows. Might Harry be worthy of his inheritance, and her heart, after all? As pressures mount and time runs out, Eleanor must decide whom she can trust—who in her life is false or true, brass or gold—and what is meant to be treasured.

Lady of a Thousand Treasures — Excerpt #5

He left me and did not return when he said he would. Not once, but twice.

Marguerite waited for me to speak, and finally I did, after a realization. “This collection was my father’s as much as the late Lord Lydney’s. I must see this honestly through—where would it be best placed?—though it’s most likely that in the end, I will come to the same conclusion his father did.”

“Delivering those valuable objets d’art to the South Kensington Museum would be a fine means by which to serve justice to the new Lord Lydney,” she said. “Is that what you intend?”

“Does Harry know you are his champion?”

“I am your champion, dearest. But I have witnessed several occasions when you were happy together and I want to see you happy again—under whatever circumstances make that possible. I don’t want you to rush toward a justice which may not be just.”

My Thoughts

I enjoyed An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson very much. This book is a fast-paced, highly engaging page turner that I struggled to put down unless I absolutely had to.

I enjoyed the premise to this novel — this idea of an unpresentable glory. An unpresentable glory is an action that at surface level looks not so good, but that is actually a kindness done to another person that allows that person to witness God’s glory. It’s kind of a confusing idea, but this concept reminded me of the men and women in the Bible who did things quietly not looking for recognition, but who were doing things simply because it was the right thing to do. Immediately, Jael from the book of Judges sprung to my mind. She was a typical Bedouin woman going about her day. She wasn’t looking for any special attention. But when a moment presented itself to rid the world of an awful human, she took it and ended up saving an entire nation! On the surface, Jael’s execution of Sisera was an unpresentable act. She killed a man in his sleep. But, to the Israelites who had been oppressed by this cruel man for 20+ years, Jael’s act showed the downtrodden Israelites God’s glory. This concept of unpresentable glory appears time and time again in this novel, and convicted me to check my own heart — am I going about my day seeking glory for myself, or am I giving glory to God? Am I being a Jael? Am I taking those moments God presents to me and helping others?

In addition to the theme that runs throughout the novel, I also really loved Lawrie’s conversion to Christianity. Lawrie, our story’s hero, has a really tough life. I won’t spill the beans as to why his life is so rough, but I will say that I often asked as I was reading, “Man, how much more can this guy take?!” After a particularly bad moment, Lawrie begins to go to a men’s Bible study. At first he is forced to go and hates it. God is not for him. But, after a particularly harrowing incident, Lawrie realizes just how much he actually needs the Lord. While Lawrie’s heart-change moment is awesome, what I really love is his need to surround himself with good, upstanding, hard working, Christian men. To be held accountable in his new walk with God, Lawrie realizes that he must have a strong support system so he can appropriately navigate the good, the bad, and the ugly of his life. I love this idea of having a network of strong, like-minded, like-hearted friends who pray, praise, and tell it like it is in order to help keep each other on the right path — God’s path.

There is quite a lot more that I could discuss about this epic novel, but I don’t want to risk an accidental spoiler. Suffice to say, I enjoyed my time reading this novel. I found the characters to be unique and multi-faceted; the complications to be highly engaging (I could not stop turning the pages because I had to find out what happens next); and, the theme timely. An Unpresented Glory forced me to take a good long look at my heart. Truly, you can’t ask for a better book than this!

Hope of Azure Springs (2018) — A JustRead Publicity Blog Tour + Giveaway

Banner Hope

Welcome to The Hope of Azure Springs Blog Tour and Giveaway hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

9780800734732Title: The Hope of Azure Springs

Author: Rachel Fordham

Publisher: Revell

Release Date: July 3, 2018

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Ada, Mich. — Between 1854 and 1929, the orphan train movement relocated over 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children from the eastern United States to rural areas throughout the country, focusing primarily in the Midwest. Since that time, this movement has captured the attention and curiosity of readers. In The Hope of Azure Springs, debut author Rachel Fordham masterfully blends history and romance in her well-crafted tale of a former “train rider.”

Seven years ago, orphaned and alone, Em arrived at a new home in Iowa after riding the orphan train. But secrets from her past haunt her, and her new life in the western wilderness is a rough one. When her guardian is shot and killed, Em, now nineteen, finally has the chance to search for her long-lost sister, but she won’t be able to do it alone.

Sheriff Caleb Reynolds is determined to solve the case and secure justice for Em. But what he doesn’t expect is the hold this strange young woman will have on his heart.

Historical romance readers will be charmed by the town of Azure Springs as they journey with Em to face her past, embrace her future, and rescue what she’s lost.

The Hope of Azure Springs is an EXCELLENT story. I 1000% loved every second of this book. I was astounded when I discovered that this is Mrs. Fordham’s debut novel. WHAT?! NO WAY!!! This book is so well-written. The characters are wonderful, especially Em and Caleb, the plot is thoroughly engaging, the emotional moments in this book had me sobbing and reaching for tissue, and the romance is perfect. This book feels like it is written by a pro with many, many novels under her belt. I cannot wait to see what Mrs. Fordham has in store for readers next.

My 9th grade religious studies teacher always began class with a 10-minute journal assignment. One day, the prompt asked my class to discuss one insecurity we struggled with on a regular basis. I am the short, squat daughter of a stunning mother who is a size 4. You can imagine what one of my insecurities at 14 may have been. In the middle of writing my response, I felt my teacher’s presence hovering behind me. When I looked back, I noticed my teacher reading my response over my shoulder. She came around to face me and proclaimed that I was an ugly duckling. She said not to worry though because most ugly ducklings turn to swans, so there was hope for me to feel differently about myself. My teacher’s words that day devastated me. I wish I could tell you that this was just one really bad teacher-student moment, and that my teacher was an exception. But, that would be a lie. I have a horrid memory from when I was 7 — a boy told our entire class I looked ugly like a clown. I have another terrible memory at 13 —  my mother slapped me in the stomach and told me to suck it in cause no one likes a fat girl. I have many more stories just like these. I guess when you’re not “perfect” people feel like they have the right to tell you all of your flaws. Maybe it makes them feel better? I’m not sure, but I do know that all of these comments have stored up in my heart. Whenever I read a book with a plain Jane heroine, she immediately endears herself to me. I feel like plain Janes and I are kindred spirits.

Em, the heroine of this novel, is a plain Jane. By the end of chapter one, I knew she would be my second favorite heroine — second only to Jane Eyre herself. Em is an excellent heroine. In one review that I read for The Hope of Azure Springs, the reviewer calls Em “unconventional.” I’m not a fan of that word. It’s a word many people use to describe the plain girl heroine. Em is amazing. She is feisty, strong, and very brave. She has been through so much bad, but does not let any of the bad turn her negative. She doesn’t whine. She doesn’t complain. Em is good. I mean the kind of good Jesus wants us to be. I don’t think Em is “unconventional.” I think Em is exceptional. Her beauty is bigger and better than the pretty girls in the novel because her beauty isn’t skin-deep. Em’s beauty is soul-deep. I love how she treats people. I love how hard she works. When my daughter is old enough to read a novel of this length, I am without a doubt giving her The Hope of Azure Springs. Em is a great example for my daughter to emulate!

The Hope of Azure Springs is a wonderful novel. It’s highly engaging. It’s deeply meaningful and emotional. And, it’s romantic and sweet and uplifting. This story and its characters will stick with me for a long time. I highly recommend this book, and give it 5+++++ STARS.

My Thoughts

The Firefighter’s Twins by Heidi McCahan is a very sweet Christian fiction novel that definitely left me smiling! The characters are well written and very realistic, the plot of the story is engaging, and the messages are timely.

I’m going to be honest here. I struggle to trust. Trust is one of the hardest things for me to do. I struggle to trust God and others. I am MAJOR Type-A. I love to control my surroundings as much as humanly possible. When life gets crazy and chaotic, I tend to clean because in my cleaning I can scrub out what is rotten and dirty, and organize everything the way I think they should be. I can create order out of disorder. There is a moment where Natalie, the heroine of this novel, thinks to herself, “If she was brutally honest, she had put a lot of faith in her own abilities, because God certainly hadn’t cooperated with her plans…So she stopped trusting Him.” WHOA! Was this moment a major mirror moment for me.

Those of you who know me, and those of you who have been reading my blog for some time now, know that my best friend is dealing with a scary, horrible, no good, rotten form of cancer that is so bad it only has a Stage IV. You know that I’ve been desperately praying. Lately, I have been struggling. It seems like my prayers for healing are not working, are not being heard. I’m terrified. The other day I was in my car driving back from a movie date with my best friend. I was struggling hard not to cry. I hate seeing her so frustrated and depressed. Wouldn’t you know it — at that very moment Lauren Daigle’s song Trust In You came on the radio! I burst into tears. I am failing at trusting in God. He isn’t moving this mountain called cancer. WHY?! So because He is not bending to my will, I am struggling. I feel so dumb even writing this. My head totally knows that God has this. God’s got control over my best friend and her situation. But, my heart is hurting and that hurting has put up a wall I MUST take down with God’s help. Natalie slowly comes to realize this too over the course of the novel. She is so focused on herself, what she thinks she finally deserves, and how her changes will positively effect everyone else (so they must be the right choices, right?!) that she becomes myopic. She leaves God out. Her praying becomes stunted. Natalie realizes she has to change her heart…and, I realize that too.

Another topic that comes to the forefront in this novel is that fear parents have in regards to their children. We want so desperately to protect our children from literally everything that we become a little crazy. We stop asking for help because only our way is the right way. We can’t possibly believe the notion that it takes a village to raise our children because the village is filled with crazy people who want to let our children play on a dirty swing set with stranger danger lurking around every corner. Are they insane!? We start to see enemies in everything and everyone. Wash your hands before you even think about looking at our kids, Grandma! Did our daughter just sniffle? Do we need to rush her to the ER? Was that kid mean to our precious child? Do we need to visit the principal and the superintendent? This is exactly how Shay, the hero of The Firefighter’s Twins, behaves in this novel. Watching Shay parent is sometimes hilarious, often annoying, and completely relatable! Again, the issue isn’t really one of fear, but of trust. Our children are created by GOD. He used His two competent hands to perfectly create our children. They aren’t technically ours. They are HIS. As parents, we need to trust in His will for our children. We need to learn to not see danger around every corner, but instead allow our kids to grow up into independent, strong, capable adults who love and trust in God themselves. When we let our fear get the better of us, we are really just hurting our kids. We aren’t actually being the parent they need. What a truly excellent reminder for me as a mother!

So, I guess this novel pulled a lot out of me. I kind of feel like I just spent an hour on God’s counseling couch writing this post. When it came time for me to read this novel, I never expected that I was going to get anything other than a sweet and satisfying story. I got that for sure, but I got so much more. God really spoke to me through Natalie’s and Shay’s struggles. He definitely showed me a few areas I still need to work on! If you are looking for a really fun story with depth that gets you to look inside yourself and see who you really are as a parent and as a child of God then The Firefighter’s Twins is definitely the novel for you.

I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the author and Just Read Tours. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
