The Kissing Hand (1993)

by Audrey Penn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Kissing Hand is a great story. It is a story about a raccoon named Chester. Chester is afraid of his first “day” of school. Like Chester, we have all been afraid by our first day of school. And this is where Chester’s mom comes to the rescue. When we are scared we go to our parents, too. Chester’s mom kisses him in the palm of his hand and tells him to have confidence. Whenever he gets scared he needs to remember his kissing hand. Mommy is always with him. This story gives kids the confidence to do things. Just because we have to leave our parents for a little while for school or sports or other activities doesn’t mean we will never see them again. The Kissing Hand is a good book because it reminds us to not let fear take over. I love this book and I hope you will read it and love it too.
Bella received this book from her mommy and daddy when she was a five-year old. She also received a copy of this book from her kindergarten teacher. She loves this book and so badly wants other children to read and love this book, too. This is Bella’s review. All thoughts are her own.
Darling Hedgehog Goes Down a Foxhole (2019)

Darling Hedgehog: Goes Down a Foxhole
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I like the hedgehog because she is cute. I do not think the fox is cute because she tries to eat Darling’s parents and friends. I think kids should read this book because it teaches a lesson to stay far, far away from strangers and to not take stuff from them. This book has safety rules to stay away from strangers. I like this book. I think this is a great book to read to kids. I hope you like this book too.
I received a review copy of this novel in paperback and eBook form from the author via Celebrate Lit. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs (1989)

by Jon Scieszka
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs because it makes me happy to read this story. I like that the Wolf is trying to do something nice for his granny. This book is a silly book, and it makes me laugh. I like that the Wolf tries to be polite and not walk into the piggies’ houses. I am also polite and don’t walk into other peoples’ homes too. I think that kids should read this book because it is a fun, silly book. I think kids will like that it is a quick story, too!
The Pigeon Wants a Puppy (2008)

by Mo Willems
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Pigeon Wants a Puppy is a 5-STAR book for sure. I love this book because the pigeon wants a puppy so badly, and that is just a really silly idea. I like this book because the pigeon is silly, and he makes me laugh. He wants some odd things for a pigeon — things you wouldn’t expect a bird to want. I think that all kids should read this book because it is a good book to use to practice reading skills, and it will cause kids to laugh. It’s also a good book to read with mommies and daddies because it will make them laugh too!
A Boy Called Dickens (2012)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A Boy Called Dickens is a 5-STAR book. I like this book because it teaches me about a boy who wrote stories named Charles. This book taught me what it was like for him to write new stories. I learned that Charles Dickens has a hard childhood. He lost his home, and his family went to jail because his daddy couldn’t pay the bills. Charles Dickens had leave school and get a job at 12 years old! This made Charles sad because all he wanted to do was go to school, read every book, and write his own stories. I learned that Charles Dickens grew up and became a very famous author. His dreams came true. I like this book because I learned not to give up on my dreams — that’s a bad choice. I think kids should read this book because it teaches you to not give up on your goals even when things look bad.
Frankencrayon (2018)

by Michael Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Frankencrayon is one of the best stories ever! This book has so many fun parts. First, it uses a lot of words that you get to “screetch!” It is so much fun. And, you get to act it out with your mommy or daddy. I like that Frankencrayon is made up of three broken crayons like Frankenstein’s monster. And, I like that it is really funny. Even my mommy and daddy laugh hard at this book. I think kids should read this book because it teaches you to change the way you see things and see “ugly” things — like a scribble — as a beautiful piece of art. Kids need to be able to do this. Go get this book and have fun reading with your mommy or daddy.
Aw, Nuts (2014)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Aw, Nuts! by Rob McClurkan is a really good book. It is one of my favorites. I love this book because squirrel likes acorns so much that he gets himself into a bit of trouble. Squirrel finds the best acorn ever, but then he loses it. So he has to go on an adventure to get his acorn back. He takes a taxi, he rides a pogo stick, he rides in a delivery van, he gets caught on a dog chasing its own tail, he rides a leaky boat, and a horse that kicks him off. Squirrel does whatever it takes to find his acorn. I really like this book because it has a lot of big words you can shout out loud, like BOING, SPLAT, POP, and AW, NUTS! I think kids should read this book because it teaches kids to be careful and to be happy with what you have. It’s also fun to read the loud words with your parents.
Bear Counts (2015)

by Karma Wilson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Bear Counts is a really good counting book. I love this book because Bear counts a lot of different animals, and I like the animals. Bear counts 1-5. He sees all kinds of things like the sun, a bunny rabbit, and muskrats to name a few. I really like the pictures in this book. Some of them show Bear in funny situations like when fish are slapping him in the face. I think that kids should read this book because it can help them learn to count from 1-5, and it’s a good way to spend time with their moms and dads.
God Made You Special (2010)

by Greg Fritz
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
God Made You Special is a 5 STAR book! I love this book because I like the drawings, especially the one with the fish at the beginning of the book. I love the book because it reminds me that God made me special, and He also made everything else on this earth special too. This book teaches kids to look in the mirror and realize that God made you exactly, perfectly as you are. I think kids should read this book because it teaches a good idea that we are all special and not mistakes.
The Wonder of Puppies (2016)

by Anonymous
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Wonder of Puppies is a 5-STAR book. I like this book because every page has a really cute puppy on it. From reading this book, I learned that puppies need owners, and they need plenty of play time and exercise. For example, dogs try to catch their tails and go round and round as one type of exercise. I also learned that puppies can have tails, but some don’t. I learned that puppies can grow up to be big, but some stay little. Puppies need LOTS of sleep and food so they can grow up strong and healthy. Puppies also stick their tongues out to help them cool down. This book is SO good; I learned so much. I think kids should read this book because it will make them happy, and it will teach them so much about puppies.
Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones (2008)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones is the best book ever! This book is so good because it has a cute kitty, awesome puppies, and BIG dinosaurs. It has a huge T-Rex! Skippyjon imagines that he is a great sword fighter and adventurer. And his imaginings takes him to his pals, the Chihuahuas. Together, Skippyjon and his chihuahua pals come upon dancing dinos! It is hilarious. Dinosaurs can’t dance! But, through Skippyjon’s bravery and his loud bark, he scares the dinos into extinction and saves his chihuahua pals from getting hurt. I think kids should read this book because it is so funny and it can make them learn about how to solve problems and learn about dinosaurs.
Pete the Cat: 5-Minute Pete the Cat Stories: Includes 12 Groovy Stories! (2017)

Age recommendation: 4-8
“Pete the Cat and the Bad Banana” is one of the twelve short stories from 5-Minute Pete the Cat Stories (2017). In “Pete the Cat and the Bad Banana,” Pete puts a bad banana in his morning breakfast and eats it. Unfortunately, it gives him a bad belly. He swears he will never eat another banana again. After he tries many different foods, Pete realizes that he shouldn’t give up on bananas. I like this story because it is fun. There is a point where Pete runs in a race and the drawing shows him stretching for the finish line. It is funny how Pete looks like he has stretched himself out. I think kids should read about the bad banana because it will help them know not to eat food that’s gone bad, and to not give up on favorite foods just because one time it wasn’t so good. And, kids should read this story because Pete is pretty cool!
Little Blue Truck Leads the Way (2015)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Little Blue Truck Leads the Way is a great book. I like how the cars go, “beep, beep, beep,” and the siren goes, “woooeee.” I like to make those sounds, too! I like how the cars finally get into line and start being nice. At first they are mean, and I don’t like that. I think that kids should read this book because this book teaches them how to be nice to one another, it can make them laugh, and it is fun to read with a mommy or daddy.
Hensel and Gretel: Ninja Chicks (2016)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Hensel and Gretel: Ninja Chicks is a 5 STAR book! I like this book because it has cool ninja chicks who say “hiya!” They use their ninja skills to save other animals from the mean fox. I like that the ninja chicks leave crumbs in the forest so they can find their way back home, but then the crumbs are missing! That really shocked me. I was worried they would get lost forever. I think kids should read this story because the ninja chicks fight hard and save the day. I also think kids should read this because in the end the bad guy loses. This is a good thing!
Are Pirates Polite? (2016)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Are Pirates Polite? is a really good story. If I could have, I would have given this story 10 stars. I like this story because I like it when Pirates act polite. There are a lot of funny moments in this book: when one pirate loses his teeth, parrots everywhere, and one pirate has a bunny and flowers tattooed on him (it’s really silly looking). I think kids should read this because it teaches kids how to behave and be polite, and it is a story that will make them laugh.
Snuggle Puppy (2003)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Snuggle Puppy (2003) by Sandra Boynton is a really, really good book. I’ve had it for a long time; it’s one of my favorites, and I plan to keep it forever. I love this book because I love the song. I like to sing it with my mommy and grandma. I like how the mommy dog gives the baby dog a cookie. I think kids should read this book because it is one of the best books ever. My mommy and I love to read it together all the time.
Ratatouille (2007)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Ratatouille is a a good book. I love it so much because I like the rats. I think the rats in this story are cool because the scavenge for food and they sneak into houses. I really like Gusteau and how he comes to life inside Remy’s imagination. I also like how Remy hides inside Linguini’s hat and controls him like a puppet. I think kids should read this book because it makes me happy, so it will make kids happy.
If You Ever Want to Bring a Dinosaur to School, Don’t (2015)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don’t is a great book because there is a part where the alligator shows Magnolia (the main character) how to do origami in the middle of class. They build airplanes, boats, and hats, and other things. But they mostly make a big mess. I also like how the alligator tries to eat a kid, but Magnolia saves the day and only a little bit of the kid’s hair goes missing. It’s a very silly part of the book. And, I like how the alligator hides in Magnolia’s locker at the end of the book and surprises a kid walking by. It’s really funny. I also really like the pictures in this book. I think kids should read this book because the alligator is super silly.
The Riddlemaster (2016)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I liked The Riddlemaster because it has a unicorn in it and I like unicorns. I also like this book because the drawings. They have a funny look to them. And, I like The Riddlemaster because this book has monsters that come from other books. They live on an island of books. I think this is cool.
Firefighter Duckies (2017)

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love Firefighter Duckies! I love that it says, “Wee-Ooo-Wee-Ooo-Wee-Ooo” on the very first page just like a fire station alarm. It’s fun to say that and I like the sound. I like that the main characters are firefighter duckies because they save people. I liked how the firefighter duckies saved the Gorilla’s hat from fire. I also like how the cupcake is mad because he got soaked and fell…you’ll have to read the story to see how that happened! I really love how they constantly go off to rescue someone else in trouble. And, finally, I love how the ABCs are not in order, but then the firefighter duckies save the day and put them back where they belong. I think kids should read this book because it is a very good book, and I really love it!
Duddle Puck: The Puddle Duck (2015)

by Karma Wilson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Duddle Puck: The Puddle Duck is a 3-STAR book to me. Ducks are supposed to sound like ducks, but Duddle Puck refuses to be who he is. Instead, he wants to be just like everyone else. I think he should be proud to be who he is. I do like how all the other characters in the book always look confused. And, I love the sound words. They are fun to say. Overall, I think this book should be read at least once.
