Miss Gwendolyn Brinley accepted a temporary paid companion position for the Newport summer season, believing it would be a lark to spend the summer in America’s most exclusive town. She suddenly finds her summer turning anything but amusing when her employer expects her to take over responsibilities as an assistant matchmaker. Tasked with the daunting prospect of attaining advantageous matches for her clients, Gwendolyn soon finds herself in the company of Mr. Walter Townsend, the catch of the Season, but a gentleman Gwendolyn finds beyond annoying.
Walter is reluctantly in search of a wife for his unruly motherless children. What he wasn’t expecting was Miss Brinley, who turns his quest for a new wife into a complete and utter debacle.
The more time they spend together throughout the Newport Season, the harder it is for Gwendolyn to find Walter a wife when she realizes his perfect match might be . . . her.
USA Today bestselling author Jen Turano’s trademark wit, sweet romance, and hilarious mischief will keep you turning the pages of this lively Gilded Age tale.

My Thoughts

A Match in the Making by Jen Turano is another home run! This book is such a fun read. Hands down, Gwendolyn is the star of this novel. Her personality is perfection! I love how she remains true to herself regardless of what Society dictates. She is never rude or disrespectful where Society is concerned, but she refuses to let it change her or mutate her into what it believes she should be. She always sticks to her guns. I also love how she shakes Walter up quite a bit and gets him to realize what truly matters in life. And the outstanding relationship she cultivates with Walter’s three darling children is one of the best parts of this story. Priscilla, Samuel, and Oscar are excellently written children and they brought SO much fun and mischief to this storyline.
As with Turano’s previous books, A Match in the Making is hilarious. Like laugh-out-loud funny. I always enjoy that about Turano’s books. When life is rough or just blah, I know I can count on a Turano novel to lift me out of my doldrums. But this story is more than just a good laugh. I really love the discussion on fatherhood and Society’s expectations. There is a really sad moment in the story where Walter realizes he has NO idea who his kids are. He doesn’t know their likes, dislikes, wants, desires, dreams, etc. He doesn’t know if they have friends or not. He doesn’t know if they have favorite foods or favorite colors or favorite toys. At one point, Walter sadly states, “He didn’t know his son, or the twins–something he’d never considered before because gentlemen of society weren’t expected to take an interest in children until any sons reached their majority and were brought in the family business” (138). Is this not the saddest thing?! I can’t imagine not knowing my kid. But the saddest thing to me is that this is just how High Society was. Kids were objects to be owned and then used in either marriage or business deals. Thanks to Gwendolyn, Walter wakes up and comes to his senses. Knowing his kids is way more important than any business deal he could make or how Society sees him. I love this, and it made me love Walter so much. Watching him become the dad he was always meant to be was my favorite aspect to this seriously fun story.
A Match in the Making is another excellent Historical Rom-Com by Jen Turano. If you are a fan of Turano’s novels, if you love a good Historical Romance, and if you enjoy a sweetly endearing story then I highly recommend this book. You will not want to miss it!
