His Encouragement #83

Good morning, and welcome to His Encouragement Thursday! I don’t know about you, but Thursdays are my struggle day of the week. By Thursday, I have already been working hard at school and at home, and I just wish it would hurry up and be Friday already. LOL! I definitely need a little extra Jesus time on Thursdays.

Trisha, my blogger friend at Joy of Reading, and I decided on calling this post “His Encouragement” because our real source of peace, strength, and security can only come from Jesus Christ. He and He alone is our constant! We pray and hope that these Thursday posts become a real encouragement to you and help you end your week strong in God’s love and purpose for you. God bless!

Today’s Thursday Encouragement comes from:

Psalm 84:10 (ESV)

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Before his death, my dad and I used to talk about God a lot. Jesus was a very popular topic between us. My dad used to say that he knew he didn’t deserve Heaven, but he loved Jesus so much he was willing to clean Heaven’s toilets if it meant he could be there with Jesus for all of eternity. I always used to laugh at that. I mean, toilets in Heaven, really?!

I came across Psalm 84:10 this week and immediately thought of my dad. The Psalmist and my dad saw eye to eye!

Maybe you’re saying to yourself, “But toilets and doors are not the same things, Nicole.” And you would be right. But the thought is the same. In the days of the Temple, the priests had to follow very strict and specific rules for every single job they performed. There was an order of importance to each job. Some jobs seemed super important and some seemed rather mundane. But all were equally important to God. If you don’t believe me, read 2 Samuel 6:1-7; Uzzah might have something to say on the importance of following God’s desires in even the smallest of details. Whether you were the high priest or not, everyone’s task mattered even if you were merely the doorkeeper (the lowest priestly station).

The Psalmist is saying in verse 10 that being the lowliest in God’s house is 1000 times better than being anything in the tents of wickedness. My dad meant the same exact thing — being with God in any capacity is better than any position among the godless no matter what they offer.

I long, with my whole heart, to be with God in His Temple. Cleaning toilets is my least favorite chore, but if that is what God needs me to do once I get to Heaven, then I will gladly do it. Because one day in God’s courts is truly better than a thousand anywhere else.

  1. This is so beautiful and really touched my heart today. It brought up a lot of wonderful memories of talking with my mom about the same things.
