About the Book

Sunday, September 1, 1895

Pine Hill Neighborhood, Atlanta, Georgia

Laurel Millard

Laurel swung her feet from the armrest of the sofa to the floor and sat up. The book she’d been reading slid from her lap and landed with a soft thud on the faded square of carpet that formed an island in the middle of the scuffed hardwood floor. Ordinarily, retrieving a book — a precious thing to both her and Mama — would take precedence over all else, but the mutter of voices from the porch and the click of a key in the front door stole her attention. Which of her siblings had chosen to disturb Mama’s afternoon nap?

I like Laurel already! A novel with a book enthusiast is one of my favorite types of novels.

I am not familiar with Kim Vogel Sawyer’s novels, but I am highly anticipating reading this story. It sounds really excellent.

Have you read any of Ms. Sawyer’s novels? Which one is your favorite if you have?

  1. Happy Friday! My first line is from “How the Light Gets In” by Jolina Petersheim:

“The caskets were closed, of course.”

  2. I also love reading novels about book enthusiasts, so I’m definitely going to have to check this one out!

My first line is from Castle on the Rise by Kristy Cambron:

“Fairy-tale weddings never included rain on the guest list.”

Hope you have a great weekend 🙂

  3. Pretty cover! My first line comes from Plain Truth by Debby Giusti. “Dr. Ella Jacobsen startled with fright as a crash of thunder shook her rural medical clinic.”

    Have a great weekend!

  4. I have this one on my TBR 🙂
On my blog today I shared the first line from When You Are Near by Tracie Peterson: https://thebeccafiles.com/2019/03/22/first-line-friday-53/ but I’m now currently reading The Baggage Handler by David Rawlings so I’ll share the first line from my current chapter (4) here: “David corralled his nerves and forced them into one knee, which bounced an erratic dance as he sat in the reception area of Sisyphus Financial’s top floor.” Hope you have a great weekend!

  5. I have never read a book by Kim Vogel Sawyer, but I should. Here I will share the first line of the chapter I’m currently on in The Heaven Answer Book by Billy Graham. The question is: Will we grieve for lost loved ones when we are in Heaven? The first line of the answer is: In God’s glorious presence, all our concerns and griefs will be erased. Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. I’ve read a couple of books by Kim Vogel Sawyer but nothing recently.
My newest book is Glory Road by Lauren Denton.

“I’d been on the porch steps shelling purple hull peas for less an hour and my thumbnails had already turned purple.”

  7. I’ve read a couple of Kim Vogel Sawyer’s books and enjoyed them, although I’m finding this one a little too easy to put down.

I’m sharing the first line from The King’s Mercy by Lori Benton on my blog today, and that’s what I’m currently reading. It’s my first Lori Benton book and I’ve heard great things about her writing, so I have high expectations!

  8. My first line is from chapter 20 of A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh by Carolyn Miller.

Today had proved a day of wonders, enough to make Caroline almost believe there might be other miracles to be seen from this God the Kirbys trusted.

  9. I haven’t tried this author yet. I’m sharing from General Meade: A Novel of the Civil War by Robert Kofman on my blog, here’s the first line from the next book I’ll be starting, Beauty in Battle by Robin Patchen:

“Darkness swallowed Harper’s rental home even before Jack navigated his pickup around the corner.”

    Happy Friday!
