Welcome to Memorable Monday! The purpose of Memorable Monday is to showcase an influential book read in the past that still sticks with you today. This fun Monday morning post is hosted by the lovely Becca at The Becca Files.
This week, I am featuring:
The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials #1)
by: Philip Pullman
Amazon
If you have not read a book by Philip Pullman, I implore you to do so immediately. He is one of the best children’s fiction writers of our time. But the beauty of his books is you don’t have to be a kid to love them. His books are filled with timely themes appropriate for both young adults and adults alike. I would recommend starting with The Golden Compass and reading the His Dark Materials series, but his Sally Lockhart series is equally as excellent a read! You really can’t go wrong with a Pullman novel.
About the Book
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal–including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.
Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want–but what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!
Share a book you’ve read in the past and explain briefly why it’s so memorable to you in the comments below.

It’s a fun book. Good allegory too.

I’ve never read Pullman’s books, but I remember reading a few years (I guess when there was a movie?) that it promoted atheism. Exaggerated claim in your opinion?

Promoted atheism?! It’s definitely an allegory about good vs. evil. It’s actually Pullman’s revision of Milton’s Paradise Lost. I never read it as a call to atheism.

Sorry I didn’t get around to visit yesterday. I haven’t read this one or watched the movie because I heard there were very anti-biblical themes in it?

You’re the second person to say that. I guess I read the book differently. It’s a retelling of Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Hmm… well like I said I didn’t share my own opinion because I just stayed away after hearing others’ thoughts. So maybe some day I’ll give it a shot and see what I think myself.
