Howl’s Moving Castle

I had to read this book for a college class. I was big into kid’s lit when I was in college because I thought I was going to become an elementary school teacher. The professor who made me read Howl’s Moving Castle first forced me to read Wynne Jones’s Dark Lord of Derkholm. I absolutely hated Derkholm. It may be one of the slowest books ever written, and I’ve read Moby Dick three times. When my professor told me I had to read Howl’s Moving Castle too, I almost cried. How was I going to read another boring book by this author? I am glad Professor Stallcup forced me to read this book because Howl’s Moving Castle is AWESOME! It’s one of the best young adult books I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it. If you have tweens in your household, this is the book for them. So much adventure, and the pacing is excellent. Also, the relationship that builds between Sophie and Howl is sweet and wonderful. It warms my heart now just thinking about this book. This just goes to show that readers need to give authors a chance beyond just a single book. Sometimes, even great authors have a fluke now and then.

About the Book

Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl’s castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there’s far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.
