His Encouragement #39

Good morning, and welcome to His Encouragement Thursday! I don’t know about you, but Thursdays are my struggle day of the week. By Thursday, I have already been working hard at school and at home, and I just wish it would hurry up and be Friday already. LOL! I definitely need a little extra Jesus time on Thursdays.

Trisha, my blogger friend at Joy of Reading, and I decided on calling this post “His Encouragement” because our real source of peace, strength, and security can only come from Jesus Christ. He, and He alone, is our constant! We pray and hope that these Thursday posts become a real encouragement to you and help you end your week strong in God’s love and purpose for you. God bless!

Today’s Thursday Encouragement comes from:

Ecclesiastes 7:9 (ESV)

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

My maiden name is Durso. It’s actually supposed to be written like this: D’Urso. In Italian it means “the Bear.” My husband likes to joke that my maiden name is the perfect description of my personality. You see, I come from a LONG line of Italian bears. The struggle is seriously real when it comes to managing my temper and my stupid mouth.

I cringe every time I read Ecclesiastes 7:9 or any other verse in the Bible that discusses anger and controlling the tongue. It is the hardest thing for me to do. And, I’m the worst kind of offender — I save all my explosions for home. My dad is an Italian Bear, too, and he explodes everywhere … at home, in restaurants, in the car, in the line at the super market … you name it, and I guarantee my dad has emotionally exploded there or will in the near future. Most of my youth was spent being totally embarrassed by my father and his outbursts, so, I unfortunately save all my outbursts for home. This means though that my poor husband and daughter typically are the only people who see my Italian Bear moments, and they never, ever deserve to be on the receiving line of my tongue.

When I am able to control the beast within, it’s because I make a conscious effort to include God in my moments of frustration and anger. WHEN I include God, I usually can keep my cool and not be a FOOL. But, when I allow my emotions to get the better of me and I ignore God in the process, I look like the biggest fool on earth.

The key to controlling your tongue, your frustrations, your anger, your foolish words is to INCLUDE GOD. Talk to Him so much throughout your day that He knows exactly how you’re doing and feeling. I try to talk to, or think about, God ALL day long. It’s amazing how much peace God offers in a given day when you constantly talk to and consider Him.

NOW, IT’S YOUR TURN!

    1. Thank you for sharing, Vickie. I love this verse. I especially appreciate “pray without ceasing.” God loves us so much He always wants to be in communication with us. It’s super cool! Hope you have a great day.

  2. I LOVE this! I have a hard time controlling my anger – at home. I can keep it mostly in check in public. I, too, kind of tense up when I read verses about it. But I know the Lord is just convicting me of this issue, and is working on my heart to change. Thank you for this!

  3. Thank you for sharing this reminder. It’s important to remember to guard our thoughts and minds even when we are in our comfort zones. 🙂

  4. While I’m sure it’s not funny, it’s kinda cute calling you a little Italian bear lol. You’re very right though, this post is a great reminder to us! The tongue is a very powerful thing.
