Thursday Encouragement

His Encouragement #37

CollageMaker_20180429_195809418.jpgGood morning, and welcome to His Encouragement Thursday! I don’t know about you, but Thursdays are my struggle day of the week. By Thursday, I have already been working hard at school and at home, and I just wish it would hurry up and be Friday already. LOL! I definitely need a little extra Jesus time on Thursdays.

Trisha, my blogger friend at Joy of Reading, and I decided on calling this post “His Encouragement” because our real source of peace, strength, and security can only come from Jesus Christ. He, and He alone, is our constant! We pray and hope that these Thursday posts become a real encouragement to you and help you end your week strong in God’s love and purpose for you. God bless!

Today’s Thursday Encouragement comes from:

Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Two days ago, I received a phone call. It was a normal phone call. Someone from work needed some answers to questions, and they knew I would be able to help. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have even thought twice about the phone call. I would have answered, said goodbye, and got back to my day. But this time, the phone call was different. This time when the phone call ended I burst into tears and cried for a good hour.

Under normal circumstances, my dear friend, Tim, would have been the go-to for those questions. But, Tim is in heaven. Has been for almost six weeks now.

It’s crazy to me how a phone call could upend me, but it did. I’ve been struggling for the past two days because my grief is BIG. It’s been so big and consuming it’s stolen my breath from me.

Today’s verse is a verse that I’ve been clinging to a lot lately. Think about what this verse is saying — GOD, the creator of the known and unknown universes, is close to us. He sees our broken hearts. He sees our crushed spirits. We are not going through any of this alone. What a lovely God we all serve!

If you are struggling with grief today, know that you are not alone. God is right by your side. In Psalm 56:8 (NLT) it states, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book.” This is a fascinating and phenomenal thought. This verse proves that God really is right there by our sides when we cry. He is making a note of every tear shed. He is writing the moment down. This makes Revelation 21:4 all the more powerful in my estimation!

  1. Psalm 23 comforts me. My father passed away one year ago this week so it has been a rough week. And my go to person, my best friend for 18 years, died in March. So I’m holding tightly to Jesus.

  2. Another comforting verse is Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

  3. Grief is a confusing animal, coming in waves, catching us off guard. I remember being in a Wal mart and suddenly not having the strength to push the cart any longer. Those breathless moments God is there. You are so wise to go to Psalms and join in lamenting your pain along with David who was no stranger to heartache. I like Ephesians 2:10, for all seasons, because it reminds us that we are God’s handiwork, “masterpiece” some translations say, and it reveals the intense, intimate relationship we share with our Creator. Love to you as you walk this hard road.

    1. Well said. It does hit me like waves…like crashing, pounding waves. And, I was just his “little sister” friend. I can’t even imagine what his wife and kids are going through. It’s a rough time. Thank you for sharing Ephesians 2:10 with me. It means a lot. ❤

  4. Grief is… It is something that is hard to prepare for because we never really know how grief will affect us until we are in it. Thank you for sharing your experiences so openly. *hug* You chose a great verse for today, and I especially love Psalm 56:8, too.

  5. I love this! Grief is different for everyone and pops up when we least expect it to. Thank goodness we have a God who already knows this and can comfort us whenever we need it 🙂
