About the Book

November, 1852

Canadian Rocky Mountains

I am the luckiest man alive. Here I stand at the edge of the world, nothing below me but rock and mountain and snow and a lake so clear it reflects the sky like green moss. It’s not yet frozen, but I know it soon will be. Another wonder of God. The stack of His marvels so high it stretches as far as I can see.

This is my very first novel to read by Misty M. Beller. So far, I am really enjoying it. The characters are very well crafted, the issues being dealt with are quite relatable, and the scenery is a character unto itself. I know I gave a bit more than the first line — I gave the first paragraph — but I really feel like it’s a great example of this author’s good writing style. I love the images. I feel like I am standing with the main character, Joseph, as he pens these sights into his journal.

Check back tomorrow. It’s my hope to have my review for this novel ready for you all to read by early morning!

  1. This is a popular book today. It was certainly an adventurous read.

I’m sharing Beyond the Ashes by Karen Barnett over on my blog, so here I’ll share my favorite line from a book I recently enjoyed, The Story Peddler by Lindsay A. Franklin:

Did he really stand by me if he didn’t love all of me, if he wanted me to lock up my passions, dreams, and hopes – my gift – and be what he wanted me to be instead?

  2. What an inspiring first line!

I’m sharing the first line from “Where the Fire Falls” by Karen Barnett on my blog today, but right now I’m going to share the first line from another read I recently enjoyed: The Captured Bride, by Michelle Griep.

“It ain’t right. YOU ain’t right.”

    Don’t take it personally. 😉

  3. My aunt and uncle recently enjoyed a trip to the Canadian west. They took lots of amazing photo’s! The description in that first line is exactly what it looked like in the photos they sent back! I can only imagine how much more grand it would be in person! This book is on my #TBR and I hope to read it soon!

Over on my blog I’m featuring Among The Poppies by J’Nell Ciesielski. Here I’ll share the first line from Chapter 22.
“The wrench spun like a dial, blurring faster and faster until it flew off the side of the engine and cartwheeled in the dirt.”

  4. Prologue
Bruce fumbled behind his ears, adjusting the elastic band necessary to hold his Santa Claus beard in place. His salt and pepper hair was mostly white around his temples, the only places not covered by the traditional Sandy hat, so he fit the part well.

My FLF comes from a book I will be reading next, Falling for the Cowgirl by Tina Radcliffe.

“I like Zeb Turner for the assistant ranch foreman position.” Travis Maxwell looked across the conference table at his sisters, Lucy and Emma, hoping for confirmation, and then shoved another cinnamon roll into his mouth.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!😊

  8. I have book 1 sitting on my kindle – guess I need to get reading 😉

I’m sharing from the prologue of King’s Folly by Jill Williamson on my blog today, so here I’ll share from the first chapter:

“A procession of fifty men made their way through the cool desert night from the royal retreat in Canden toward The Gray. Fifty-one men, technically, though the king did not count the wailing convict riding in the cage since the man would soon be dead.”

Happy reading and have a great weekend!

  9. My FLF is from A Defense of Honor by Kristi Hunter:
    London 1816
Graham, the Viscount Wharton, heir to the earldom of Grableton, pride of the Cambridge fencing team, coveted party guest, and generally well-liked member of both Brooke’s and White’s , was bored.

    1. I cannot wait to start A Defense of Honor. It’s right next to me as I type this. I just have to get through a couple of reviews and my friend’s funeral and then I can relax with Kristi’s latest. I absolutely love her books! I hope you have a great weekend, Paula!

  10. Those are beautiful first lines!

Today’s first lines come from Kat Mizera’s new release, Defending Dani. This was a super sweet and emotional hockey romance.

“Sergei Petrov got out of the taxi and hurriedly paid the drive as he grabbed his bag. He hadn’t seen his son in more than two months and couldn’t wait to look into his sweet little face.”

I’m featuring lines from Lexi Blake’s new release “Order of Protection” on my blog. Check out to see the start of her newest series!
