The Innkeeper’s Daughter

by Michelle Griep

About the Book

Dover, England, 1808

Numbers would be the death of Johanna Langley.

I think that maybe Johanna and I are kindred sisters. Numbers are the death of me, too!

I am about 1/3 of the way done with this novel, and I can already highly recommend it. The characters are very well written, the intrigue is just enough to keep me guessing, and there is quite a bit of action that is keeping me turning pages late into the night! And, that cover! Isn’t Johanna lovely?

For those of you who are Michelle Griep fans, you will be familiar with a couple characters from Brentwood’s Ward as they show up throughout this book. No worries if you haven’t read Brentwood’s Ward though. The Innkeeper’s Daughter reads as a stand-alone story.

Now it is your turn! Grab the book you are currently reading, open to chapter one, and post the first sentence (or second sentence) in the comments below. 1. This one’s coming up on my TBR. I’m looking forward to it!

I have the first line from Sondra Kraak’s new release, Three Words and a Kiss, on my blog today, but right now I’m going to share the first two lines from my current read, ‘Justice’ by Emily Conrad, which releases on 9 March:

“Snow floated onto Main Street, each flake large enough to catch the breeze like a parachute. A miniature army, launching a surprise invasion on March first.”

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Happy Friday! I love Michelle Griep and actually hope to get to this one this weekend. I smile at that first line because I’m so not a numbers person!

  4. I’m reading it , too! Along with Cross Fire from C.C. Warrens:
The aroma of sweat and coconut shampoo filled the room, bringing to mind a tropical sweat lodge. I paced the outside of the rubber mat, casting wary looks at my opponent.

  6. Happy Friday! I can’t wait to read this one!!😁

My First Line Friday comes from a book I will be reading soon, Before We Were Strangers by Brenda Novak!

As far back as Sloane McBride could remember, she’d been told she was an ice-queen. Even the people closest to her, especially the people closest to her, complained about her reserve.

    Have a great weekend!😁

  7. I’ve read of her books and have decided she’s a great writer. This one sounds good, too. Happy Friday! The book I’m sharing on my blog is an old one: The Knight and the Dove by Lori Wick. Here, I will share Love on the Mend by Karen Witemeyer, “Peace and quiet. That’s all he sought.” Have a wonderful weekend.

I have just started aND CUTE FOR THE DEAD, a Florence Nightingale story. CHAPTER 1 September 1853 Some said I must have been possessed by a demon to take on the position as superintendent at the Establishment for Gentlewomen

  9. Happy Friday! My lines for today: “Louisville, Kentucky, 2015

All Allison wanted was for this conversation to be over. That and she hoped the ehavy gray clouds would part and the sun would appear. It could go either way today – sun or rain. She stood at the kitchen window, peeling old white paint off the sill as she waited for the Kentucky sky to make up its mind.

Meanwhile, sitting behind her at the table, her lover, Cooper Mc Queen, gently ruined her life.” Happy Friday!

  10. I need to read something by Michelle! Everyone says she’s awesome.

Here’s the first line from the prologue of my current read: “Wyatt Paxton never realized coming home could be as bittersweet as leaving.” (From The Sea Before Us by Sarah Sundin)

  11. I loved this book – I need to get a copy of Brentwood’s Ward at some point 😀
I’m sharing from Karen Barnett’s The Road to Paradise on my blog today, so here I’ll share the first line from another book I hope to read soon, The Alliance by Jolina Petersheim:

“Buffered by grassland, the collision is strangely quiet.”

  12. Haha. I sometimes think that way about numbers and figures. I remember reading ‘Brentwood’s Ward’, what was it, three years ago now? Although I liked the story, there were a few things that ruined it for me in the end. I do have this one from NetGalley and hope they have not come up again.

    1. I hope those issues don’t come up for you, too! I do hope you enjoy The Innkeeper’s Daughter. I’m really liking it. But, I haven’t read Brentwood’s Ward. So, I can’t compare.
