A Song Unheard (2018) + A Special 2-Book Giveaway

35069089

A Song Unheard (2018) by Roseanna M. White is the second novel in her Shadows Over England series. This novel comes in all forms including eBook, and is 416 pages in length. With a full-time job and a very busy five-year old, A Song Unheard took me three days to read. If I didn’t have to work, I think this book might have taken me one day to devour — it is that amazing!!! I purchased a copy of this novel through Amazon, and I received a review copy in paperback form from the publishers, Bethany House Publishers. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own. I give this excellent story 5+++ STARS. A Song Unheard is a Historical Christian Romance.

About the Book

Willa Forsythe is both a violin prodigy and top-notch thief, which make her the perfect choice for a crucial task at the outset of World War I—to steal a cypher from a famous violinist currently in Wales.

Lukas De Wilde has enjoyed the life of fame he’s won—until now, when being recognized nearly gets him killed. Everyone wants the key to his father’s work as a cryptologist. And Lukas fears that his mother and sister, who have vanished in the wake of the German invasion of Belgium, will pay the price. The only light he finds is in meeting the intriguing Willa Forsythe.

But danger presses in from every side, and Willa knows what Lukas doesn’t—that she must betray him and find that cypher, or her own family will pay the price as surely as his has.

My Thoughts

I believe people have at least one thing that makes them unique and special. Everyone has some kind of talent or skill that sets them apart. It’s the thing we go to when we need solace from this crazy world. For me it’s analysis. When I read a piece of fiction I immediately see puzzle pieces that need to be decoded and deciphered and flushed out. I then need to deduce how the pieces work as a whole. To me, it’s one of the most beautiful skills, and I deeply cherish this ability. I believe it is my special and unique connection to God; a very real gift from Him. Six years ago, I lost my ability to analyze and it was torture to my soul. I suffered a traumatic brain injury — I had a subdural hematoma. I endured a migraine for 64 days (it was horrendous), and I lost most of my short term memory and some of my long term memory. I had to relearn words. I had to relearn how to speak. It was absolute torture. I would like to say that I stood firm next to God and successfully overcame this loss of my abilities, but that would be a lie. I was hurt, angry, super confused, scared, and voiceless. When you lose words, as if you had never learned them, but you know you had learned them, it’s awful. It took a full two years to get back to my “normal,” and I still have residual side effects that rear their ugly heads when I am tired or stressed.

I mention this because I relate to Willa SO deeply. I think she may be my soul sister. Willa is a violin prodigy. She hears music in her head day and night whether she is playing or not. There is a moment in the novel where she realizes this music is her connection to God — I wept! Yes! That is exactly how I feel. This thing that may seem insignificant to most is the most special. It’s the thing God gave me. It’s my gift. When Willa momentarily loses her gift, I bawled like a baby right on my couch. In fact, I’m trying not to cry as I type this post. In that moment when you lose the thing that makes you special, it feels like you’ve been cut off. Cut off from God, cut off from your physical self, cut off from the world. It’s so lonely. Roseanna White, writer extraordinaire, captures the pain and anguish that Willa feels from her loss so well it took my breath away. I will add that Willa deals a little better than I did and goes to God quicker than I did, which is an excellent reminder to me. Instead of stewing in my sadness when things get too tough, I need to go to God not fight Him.

What else did I love about this book? So many things!!! First, the chemistry between Lukas and Willa is wonderful. They have the best banter throughout the entire book — I laughed out loud. Second, the characters themselves are all fabulously written. What impressed me the most is the depth to each character — even the secondary characters. Not a single character felt like a stock character or a caricature. They all truly could be various people you would meet walking down the street. They’re so multifaceted! Which makes Roseanna’s writing talent all the more impressive! How does she keep all the characters straight in her head?! And, finally (for this post), I loved how well White is able to convey the stress of the times. The outset of WWI, the Germans taking over countries and terrorizing lands and people, it must have been truly terrifying. The reader really gets a sense of this tension and fear and danger throughout the story. In fact, I felt myself holding my breath a few times as I was reading and had to remind myself to breathe! Now that is a testament to how good this book is!

A Song Unheard is a phenomenal, captivating, flawless story. From the very first word to the last, I was hooked. I highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a well-written, intriguing, and endearing Historical Romance than this is the book for you. Buy this book immediately. You will not be disappointed that you did.

  4. The very first Roseanna M White book I read was A Stray Drop of Blood. Such an amazingly gut-wrenching and vividly emotional book. I still need to read her follow up book A Soft Breath of Wind. Jewel of Persia and Giver of Light are on my list as well as these two featured books.
