“Some of my men will come home in a body bag. So, I don’t want to hear it. This topic is no longer up for discussion.” Quenton’s tone reflected his annoyance at the too-familiar argument.

About the Book

This book is amazing! I am already to chapter 21 and I am having a very hard time putting it down. I can tell that this book will stick with me long after I finish reading. The characters are stellar, the situations are heart-wrenching, and the themes are so poignant. This book has been a roller coaster ride for my emotions: I’ve teared up several times, been angry and frustrated, and I’m currently scared for one character — an American soldier who has fallen behind enemy lines in Germany. This book has not had a dull moment yet.

Now it is your turn! Grab the book you are currently reading, open to chapter one, and post the first sentence (or second sentence) in the comments below. 1. I just finished two books so…..
I am just going to crack open Irene Hannon’s Dangerous Illusions:
“ Hello Matt, long time no see”
As the words slithered through the clammy night air, a jagged shaft of lightening illuminated the speaker’s face for one brief instant.

    1. I’m jealous you were able to finish two books. I barely finished one. Having to go back to work this week has really put a damper on my reading schedule. I’ve never read an Irene Hannon book yet. I will have to check her out. Happy Friday, Paula!

      1. Well one of them was a sorter book: 12 Days at Bleakly Manor! It was so readable and so reminiscent of Dickens! I have to of course write reviews for those books, though! I’m procrastinating! Happy Friday to you Nicole!

  2. The cover image looks like a sweet romance, but that opening paragraph holds a definite promise of suspense. Intriguing!

I’m sharing the first line from Lady Jayne Disappears by Joanna Davidson Politano on my blog. It has so many great lines!

I’m currently reading ‘Aint Misbehaving by Marji Lane. Here’s the first line:

“Her future wasn’t the only thing at stake.”

    1. Thank you for your comment today, Iola! I very much want to read Lady Jane Disappears. I have it on my toppling TBR pile right now. I am intrigued by the book you are currently reading. I will have to check that out. Happy Friday!

  3. I enjoyed that one too!

I’m sharing the first line from Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” today, in keeping with the diversity theme, but here I’m going to share the first line of “One Plus One Equals Trouble” by Sondra Kraak:

“Killing Edward Stevens was beyond her proper ways. So instead, Claire Montgomery made tea.”

  4. Happy Friday!

My First Line Friday comes from a book I will be reading later this month, The Upside of Falling Down by Rebekah Crane….

I was born twice. The first time was on July 9 to Paul and Mimi Haas in Cleveland, Ohio. My mother died six years later.

Have a great weekend and stay warm!

  5. Oh man, that’s an interesting and unique first line. I have this on my Kindle waiting for me to read. 🙂

I’m sharing A Letter from Lancaster County by Kate Lloyd on my blog today, but I’m currently reading Isaiah’s Daughter by Mesu Andrews so I’ll share that here.

My friend Yaira said to be brave – but why? Brave or scared, we kept marching. She told me to be a big girl, not to cry, but I’m only five and I’ve seen big men crying.

    Happy Weekend!

  6. What a cozy cover! I want to lock myself in that house and settle in by the fireplace with a book and a mug of hot cocoa! I’m diving into Missing Isaac by Valerie Fraser Luesse today!

  7. I’ve looked at this book a couple times. May have to get myself a copy.

I’ll share the first line from the next book on my TBR list: Until We Find Home by Cathy Gohlke: Lightning crackled, splitting the night sky over Paris, illuminating letters painted on the bookstore window across the street: La Maison des Amis des Livre.

  9. I love these Fridays & reading the first lines from all these books I’ve either enjoyed or want to read!

My first line is from Rush by Jayme Mansfield:

“I can’t stop shivering when I sleep alone.”

  10. My first line today is from Robin Lee Hatcher’s You’ll think of Me. I’m reading it now and I have trouble putting it down! “Brooklyn Myers sat on the narrow stretch of lawn beside the brick apartment building, watching her ten-year-old daughter.” I hope you have a great weekend!
